Cut the cake, not the benefits!

Hundreds of celebrations are being held across the country in honor of Social Security’s 70th birthday. The events are highlighting the accomplishments of Social Security over the past 70 years -- achievements that include dramatically reducing elderly poverty, providing for workers and families living with disabilities, and lifting a million children out of poverty.

The activities include delivering birthday cakes with the message “cut the cake, not the benefits” to members of Congress who are considering private-account plans.

The St. Petersburg Times reports on the festivities here and here.
