Will Fort Myers say:
"Don't feed the homeless"?

Fort Myers City Council is scheduled to consider an ordinance creating requirements for the distribution of donated or complimentary food in parks.

I can't find the proposed ordinance online, and the Fort Myers News-Press apparently hasn't reported on it. But it sounds suspiciously like Orlando's ordinance restricting "large group feedings" in city parks.

Fort Myers had an ordinance banning the distribution of food on city property on the books for a while -- and it has some interesting history. Originally passed in December 2004, it was amended a few months later to exclude picnics, so City Councilwoman Frankie Jennings could host a campaign barbecue on city property. Then the city agreed to re-examine the ordinance in a move to keep it off the meanest-cities list.
