5 times as many homeless people?

Expanding the federal definition* of "homeless" to include households that are doubled up for economic reasons would increase the size of the homeless population by a factor of five.

That's the conclusion reached in a new report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

About 750,000 people on a given night currently meet the HUD definition of homeless. NAEH estimates that expanding the definition would add
3.8 million people to homeless population.
