As if landlords don’t have
enough advantages already

Consumer groups are speaking out against a bill in the Florida Legislature they say would penalize renters who terminate leases early even if the landlord has someone to fill the vacant apartment.

The so-called “Double Rent” bill would allow landlords to collect on the remaining months of a lease, plus charge fees equivalent to two additional months of rent.

Current Florida law prevents landlords from charging renters if the landlord can fill the vacant apartment.

Consumer action groups like the Consumer Federation of the Southeast and ACORN say the proposal is unfair.

They say if the landlord has someone ready to step in to fill a vacant apartment, they shouldn't be allowed to penalize the person who terminates their lease.

Read the bill here and the committee staff analysis here.

The bill was passed 16-0 last week by the House Business Regulation Committee.

Well, Leo may have gotten screwed, but although three rights make a left, two wrongs don't make a right.
