Homeless men fend off attack

Two homeless men struck back after they were attacked in an area of Gibsonton* where the homeless are robbed regularly of the pay they earn working for a nearby labor pool.

The attack appeared to have been planned, said a spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Three young men threw rocks at the homeless men and knocked them down. But when the attackers moved in to beat and kick them, the homeless men fought back.

The young men's families tried to say that they were the victims, but sheriff's deputies released the homeless men and charged the young men with aggravated assault and battery.

* Gibsonton, not far from Tampa, was famous as a sideshow wintering town, where various circus "freaks" would spend the off season. It was home to Percilla the Monkey girl, the Anatomical Wonder, and the Lobster Boy. Siamese twin sisters ran a fruit stand here.
