Days are numbered
for Gainesville's Tent City

Gainesville will begin ordering people out of the homeless encampment known as Tent City within about a month, city commissioners have decided.

An estimated 100 to 200 people live in Tent City.

Along with trespass notices, Tent City residents camping on city property will be offered vouchers to stay in either the St. Francis House or Salvation Army shelters. The city will spend $62,400 on shelter space and authorize the shelters to exceed their regular capacity so that no one in the shelters is displaced.

Homeless people living on nearby private property will be evicted without an opportunity for shelter space.

Commissioners also deferred a decision on whether to create a one-stop center for homeless services.
