Make a call to help the hungry -- and the survivors of Katrina

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Congress will be forced to re-arrange its legislative agenda. But as of now, there are still plans to cut $35 billion from programs like food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, the Earned Income Tax Credit, TANF and SSI by September 16.

Call your senators and representative at 1-800-426-8073 on Thursday and Friday, September 8 and 9. Use this toll-free number (generously provided by the American Friends Service Committee) to be connected the Capitol switchboard.

The Coalition on Human Needs suggests telling them:

Please oppose reducing or eliminating services in food stamps, Medicaid, TANF and other critical help for vulnerable people. The federal government must provide help for Katrina victims; these new responsibilities mean that cuts to vital programs that provide food, health care and income to the poor and sick are out of the question.
It is wrong to impose the biggest budget sacrifices on the sick, the poor, people with disabilities, the elderly and children by cutting supports while expanding tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and corporations.
And help spread the word. We need thousands of calls to reach Congress -- and you can make a difference. Start by e-mailing this post to everyone you know.
